UPDATE: We are currently on summer break, starting up again on Tuesday, February 3.
At the Auckland Chess Centre, we run an Adult Improvers Night on Tuesdays from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. Class is from 7pm to 8pm, with either a guest lecturer from 8pm or casual chess.

For 2026, will have two classes running:
Below 1600: The Silman Club
Location: Tournament Hall
We are working through the legendary book ‘How to Reassess Your Chess’ by Jeremy Silman, aimed at improving players with a FIDE rating between 1400 to 1600. The focus is on understanding imbalances, planning, and long-term positional play.
Above 1600: The Analysers Club
Location: Bughouse Room
Looking to analyse your over-the-board classical games with experienced club players? This group focuses on post-game analysis, identifying themes, and decision-making.
Frequently Asked Questions
I’d like to join!
That’s great! Please let Brogan know in advance – we’d love to have you involved.
Are these classes suitable for beginners?
Our classes are at the beginner-plus level, for adults with some chess experience that are looking to improve. If you’re a beginner, we recommend playing a few Monday night club games to dip your feet in and watching a few Youtube videos. Levy Rozman’s Ultimate Beginner Guide is a great start!
Do you recommend any other material?
Last year, we went through Yusupov’s legendary coursebook ‘Build Up Your Chess 1’. This is an excellent book with 24 lessons, covering everything from tactics to endgames.
We also recommend that all students practice the ‘Woodpecker Method’ as part of their chess regimen, focusing on the 223 easy puzzles to begin with. This will keep you sharp on tactics, while we focus on strategy and positional understanding in class.
Can I turn up to play chess?
This is a class-based format. While some people play some casual blitz (speed chess) before and after the class, our main chess night is on Monday night.
Why adults only?
Well, we already have a Junior Night, and we noticed across Auckland that there are already quite a few events that cater towards improving juniors, but few opportunities directed at improving adults.
Improving juniors and adults learn in different ways, and have different strengths. While juniors tend to pick up new concepts quickly, adults often benefit from a more patient approach.
Do you have parking?
Of course! You’re more than welcome to use our car park area.
