Hi everyone, our junior club is cancelled this week due to the Auckland Chess Weekends tournament. We will resume next week on May 27th.

Saturday Junior Night started last week Apr 29th
Last week we had about 34 junior players attend our first junior night of this term. It was pretty packed for a junior night. They all had a great time. We’ve updated the term schedule here: https://www.aucklandchess.nz/saturday-night-junior-chess/
The Auckland Chess Weekends series continues on 20-21/5
The May event of our club’s weekend classical tournament series will be held on Sat-Sun, 20th and 21st of May. Register online at https://newzealandchess.nz/auckland-chess-weekend-may-2023/ (current list of those registered on Vega)
- ACW events take only two days, just a normal weekend, and you can leave long weekends for bigger plans such as travelling
- ACW events are played in a slightly faster time control of 60 minutes plus 30 seconds increment, which is still considered classical by FIDE
- Unrated players in ACW events will not have to play each other, which provides an opportunity for more players to get FIDE-rated quicker.
The full list of ACW events is on the Auckland Chess Weekends page.
Autumn Cup continues on 17/4; register for the ANZAC weekender
The Autumn Cup will resume on 17/4. Please let the captain know if you cannot come, all as usual.
During the ANZAC weekend, the traditional 3-day, 6-round Swiss tournament with 90+30 chess will be held at ACC. ANZAC day will be Tuesday 25/4, so the tournament days will be on the 22nd, 23rd, and 25th of April. Register online https://newzealandchess.nz/auckland-anzac-weekender-2023/
The club night will happen on 24/4 (Monday is a working day), as usual.
Nigel Metge wins Summer Cup; Autumn Cup next week
Nigel Metge came first in ACC Summer Cup 2023. WCM Isabelle Ning and Daqi Mao finished second. New player Markis Tew finished with 5.0/7 from his first FIDE-rated event, sharing 3rd= with a group of players. Congratulations!
ACC Autumn Cup starts next week on 3/4, with a break on 10/4 for Easter Monday.

Brogan Powlesland wins ACW March
Brogan Powlesland didn’t make the cut to join the ACC Summer Cup on Mondays, but participated in the inaugural Auckland Chess Weekend (ACW) event at ACC and won it, collecting a nice ACW T-shirt! The next event will be in May (see the ACW section on our website for details).

George Trundle round-robin 2023 (12-21/4)
Don’t forget to enter the George Trundle round-robin event, which will be held from the 12th to the 21st of April during the school holidays at ACC. It’s a rare chance to play with equal players in one of the four rating groups. Only 40 seats are available.
The time control being used is the same as in FIDE Olympiads and New Zealand Congress. One classical game per day.

Monday nights are full, please check our other options
We want to give everybody a game on Mondays but some nights we are just 100% full like last Monday, all three rooms were packed like sardines in round 2 of the Summer Cup, and some people had to be turned away.
The club captain isn’t playing though so if you didn’t get a game, play with the captain outside (weather permitting). Please bring your own board just in case we run out of them, too 🙂
If you’re a junior player, please join the Saturday programme.
We’ll also start Auckland Chess Weekends in March for all ages. Stay tuned and follow our webpage and Facebook account.
Club Mondays resume 13/2
A quick heads up to those who filled the registration form for ACC 2023 – Monday nights will resume after the Waitangi weekend, on the 13th of February. We will publish a detailed calendar for 2023 soon next week.
So far there is no change of plans to the Auckland Anniversary and Waitangi weekenders. Please use the contact email you received during registration if you have questions for organisers, not the usual ACC contacts.
Stay safe during the Auckland flood.
GM Samy Shoker is holding a simul on Friday, 20/1
As announced previously at the club, Grandmaster Samy Shoker (FIDE 2491), one of the winners of the 2023 NZ Congress, will hold a 20-25 boards simul at the Auckland Chess Centre at 7 pm on Friday, the 20th of January.
Please come if you have registered before, and call 09 630 2042, if you want to join.
